Internaitonal Conference on Life Skills Education (08 -10 December 2010)

BACKGROUND OF THE CONFERENCE

Education is a critical factor in nation building and is a continuous process that aims to develop the capacities latent in human nature which in turn fosters the progress of society. It is a powerful instrument for achieving and sustaining economic growth, reducing poverty and enhancing equity. Today we are living in a knowledge driven society and education for the knowledge economy is to cultivate the highly skilled, flexible human capital needed to compete in the global markets. The universal challenge at this juncture is developing human potential with the necessary skills that the twenty first century demands. For this it is essential for each individual to learn how to learn. As recommended by the Delor's Report of UNESCO, advancing towards a Learning Society, is built upon the four pillars of education i.e. Learning to know, Learning to be, Learning to Do and Learning to live together which forms the basis of Life skills education. The report also emphasized the concept of learning throughout life which is the key to the twenty-first century. Many countries have and are considering the development of life skills education in response to reform traditional educational systems, which seem to be in tandem with the realities of modern social and economic life. Quality education is imperative, and required at all levels, be it primary, secondary or higher education. Quality education calls for using life-skills approach in education and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) calls for including life skills in reorienting education to address sustainability. Education for Sustainable Development, Quality Education and Life Skills Approach are inextricably linked.

This Conference will facilitate to take stock off the current trends in education and share the perspectives of life skills approach to education and help to stimulate new thinking in the area of education for the 21st century.

The Life Skills Approach refers to the interactive process of teaching and learning which focuses on acquiring knowledge, attitudes and skills which support behaviours that enable us to take greater responsibility for our own lives; by making healthy life choices, gaining greater resistance to negative pressures, and minimising harmful behaviours. At its simplest, the life skills approach is simply good interactive educational methodology which focuses on more than just information. No doubt information is necessary, but not sufficient to develop or change behaviors. Therefore to have an impact on behaviour, information based approaches need to be combined with attitudinal and interpersonal skills, known as ‘life skills’ which would facilitate to enhance efforts to positively develop or change behaviour, especially related to well being and healthy functioning in society.
